Herefordshire's Community Car Clubs

Herefordshire’s community car clubs are playing a crucial role in supporting residents around the county to make the journeys they need, without having to buy a car.

A community car club is a local, member-based initiative that provides access to pay-as-you-drive vehicles.

They also support residents to make environmentally friendly transport choices, as the club member has access to a car when needed, but can otherwise travel by walking, cycling, train etc.

Community car clubs are typically run by local groups to support their communities, and there are six clubs in Herefordshire spread across the county.

Between them, they provide cars in Colwall, Fownhope, Kington, Ledbury, Leominster, South Hereford and St James & Bartonsham.

Leominster Car Share – ‘LECS’ - has been operating successfully for more than three years following invaluable launch support  from Herefordshire Council and the long established Malvern Hills Car Clubs.

The club owns and runs two cars for members’ use, a Renault Zoe electric vehicle and a petrol Nissan Note.

“The club is certainly proving to be a lifeline for people who do not own a private car but need occasional use of a vehicle” said volunteer vehicles manager Clancy Wilson.

Car clubs can give you cost benefits too, compared to owning a car.  Kington Community Car Share Club say that “if you only need to use a car 2 or 3 times a week, you could halve your motoring costs (most members save much more)”.

Gareth, a user of the Malvern Hills Car Club, said:

"I’ve recently parted with an old car that was no longer reliable. The availability and convenience of vehicles in the Malvern Car Club has meant that I haven’t yet needed to replace the vehicle.

I need access to a car weekly rather than daily and I’ve already saved on tax, insurance and servicing costs for a car sitting idle. Joining the club was easy and they provided direct support alongside a really simple app to book the car whenever I need it."
