No Mow May Success for HCA
Tuesday 6 May 2025 12.57pm
No Mow May is an annual campaign from Plantlife that encourages anyone with a garden or greenspace they are responsible for to forgo the mower for the month of May - and beyond!
Many of Britain’s wildflower meadows have been lost, and resources for essential pollinators and other wildlife are often few and far between. Leaving your lawn to grow that little bit longer not only stores carbon and provides habitat, but gives flowering plants the opportunity to produce those all-important flower heads, full of food resource for critical insects.
In 2024, Herefordshire College of Arts committed their Queen’s Lawn to the No Mow May movement, going even further and leaving the grasses and other flowering plants to grow on until September!
Jess Bugler, Sustainability Lead at the college declared the effort a ‘great success’ after witnessing the increase in flowering plants and insects visiting the site, and intends to repeat the project in 2025.
With carefully crafted signage, mown edges, and a managed area for students to use, the lawn was both beautiful, functional, and environmentally friendly.
